No update to the actual system is taking. Nav updates are map packs and will update only the cities and surrounding areas that are noted.
Often it will include fixes to clean up bugs or lock up on the system. I think there is a link here or on another forum (nitro one maybe?) that someone has posted the cd for download. Mygig updates are firmware that will adjust the way the HDD and the interface, etc will operate. Either way, I will ask around and see, but don't get your hopes up. Most 2007 Chrysler models that had navigation did not have MyGig, and navigation was ran off a separate disk drive.

I understand where your coming from, its like a pc, just a software upgrade, but I really don't think thats how they do it. We have parts that have mulitple levels and even though with the right level software you could disable some features, you don't ship them with all the components for everything. I work in the automotive supplier industry. The only thing you'll get at the above website is Software updates for mygig and database for music.

They just arn't going to include the GPS hardware needed inside the unit for free but load it with software that doens't use it. Map updates are tied to your serial number of your mygig. My concern is that aside from the external GPS antenna and sirius satellite stuff, there is some internal hardware that goes along with it.
There should be no charge for it, so if a dealer ever tryed, tell them you are not paying and get with Harmon Becker yourself.
